On May 18th we took a red eye flight to Milan for a week of travel along the Italian Riviera and Tuscan coastline. We met our friends Jon and Lin for the journey, and had a wonderful time exploring all Italy had to offer......mostly in the food and wine department!
Our red eye flight was delayed in DC, so the trip started off on the wrong foot. Next we shared a row with a guy with serious breathing problems who preceded to fall asleep and snore amazingly loudly for the entire trip. Finally, since we were delayed in DC, and changed in London, we were left with only an hour to circumnavigate Heathrow airport (a monster by the way). Unfortunately, this meant our checked baggage also had very little time to make the connection, and when we landed in Milan I was not greeted by my luggage. From here things did slowly get better. We found our favorite restaurant in Florence from memory, we had gorgeous weather, and our travel the rest of the trip was trouble free.
From Florence we drove a rental car to Manarola, part of the Chinque Terre, a series of 5 Italian Riviera towns. After Manarola we hit the road for the Isle of Elba. Although most known for it's role in Nepoleonic history, it functions as a spectacular summer resort for middle class Italians, and Germans. Next was eastward to Tuscany, and the city of Montepulciano, to visit a B&B we stayed at on our honeymoon. Then finally back to Florence for a last meal at our favorite restaurant, and back on the train to Milan to catch our flight home. Enjoy the pictures.

On March 11th I took a flight to Denver to ski the many resorts around the Continental Divide. Mike Marchand, and Casey Cavanna joined me on the trip. Great weather, and superb snow conditions followed us all week, and we ended up with a spring ski trip to remember.
We managed to hit 4 different resorts from our base camp at Breckenridge, CO. The first was Loveland. It is a "small" resort when compared to some of the others around, but there was more than enough terrain to keep us busy all day. We didn't even ski whole sections of the slope because we only had one day.
Next was Breckenridge. This mountain was huge. It is actually 4 peaks. We skied our way across the mountain the first day, then returned later in the week to ski our favorites for a second full day. We barely scratched the surface of the available terrain in 2 days.
After the first day at Breck, ski day 3 was spent at A-Basin. Excellent advanced skier's mountain. Lots of steep shoots and long cruisers. Mike switched to skiis for this day, and is glad he did. It would have been tough on a board.
Ski day 4 was back to Breck after a evening storm rolled through.
Ski day 5 and St. Patricks day was spent at Copper Creek. This is also a large mountain, but the terrain was less varied and focussed more on intermediate skiers. We still had fun on the ultra-wide cruisers, and the glade runs.
It was quite the ski week, and I am looking forward to next March. West Coast anyone?!

On May 21st 2001 we boarded a red eye to London. We arrived at 10am and began the process of figuring out how the hell to get to our hotel. The tube took us practically to the front door, and after an hour or two nap, we headed out to explore the city. The first day we just hung around Bayswater, the neighborhood where we were staying, but there was plenty to keep us occupied. The following day we explored more of the traditional locations; The Tower of London, Piccadilly Circus, and Trafalgar Square. It rained most of the time, but having just experienced our 5th Oregon winter, the weather really didn't seem all that bad. This was a good thing, because we were headed to Ireland next, and the weather certainly was not going to improve.
After one week, we jumped on a plane for Ireland. The last week of our vacation we drove from Scotland back to London for our return flight, but stopped in a few choice English cities along the way namely York and Cambridge.

We took a morning flight from London to Dublin. After a short bus ride, and a brisk uphill walk with 50lbs of clothes on our backs, we arrived at the "Brewery Hostel". It is located along the wall that surrounds the Guinness Brewery in the Christchurch section of Dublin. We dumped our packs off and went to find some lunch. Debra, Karen's sister arrived the following day, and we decided to wander around a bit. Old Dublin castle, Trinity, Guinness, and a rip roarin' night in the Temple Bar area of the city left us tired, hung over, and ready to see what else the country offered. So, we packed up the rental car, and headed south to Waterford and Kilkenny, west to Kinsale, north around the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula, to Galway. Overall a busy week. We then drove east back to Dublin to drop Debra off, then alittle further to the Wicklow mountain range for a second week. Not too shabby.
